Healthy Pizza Options for the Holidays

With the winter holidays steadfastly approaching, many people will pack on a few pounds due to all of the delicious food all around.

But, if you’re having pizza for your office holiday party or enjoying a slice during a football game, it doesn’t always have to be “unhealthy.”

In fact, Pizza Sola offers many healthier pizza options:  try toppings such as fresh peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, and spinach on a classic pie. Or, try a white pizza with chicken and broccoli. You may also enjoy The Herbivore or Sergeant Peppers – great ways to get your veggies!  There’s always the option of having one of our tasty garden salads or our Veggie Weggie Solazone if you aren’t in the mood for pizza.

Lastly, don’t forget about our signature Vegan Pie. This Vegan pizza is a cheeseless pizza with banana peppers and pineapple.

Other ways to make your pizza experience a little healthier? Opt for water to drink instead of pop or beer. Skip dessert (for now) or, hey, why not walk or bike to one of our 4 convenient locations?

However … we won’t be mad if you just want to indulge. I mean, the holidays are coming…you can always feel free to treat yourself, and burn it off later!

Whatever your pizza style, we ask you to enjoy any one of our tasty dishes.

It isn’t the Heat or the Humidity – It’s the Pizza!

Summer’s in full swing in Pittsburgh: PNC Park is packed with people for Pirate games (finally), different venues around the city are filled nightly with the noise of summer concerts and IT IS HOT OUTSIDE.  Luckily, Pizza Sola has a few menu items that are perfect for these hot summer nights.

Pizzas light on toppings like our Bianca pizza and Margherita pizza are great for those dog days, while the Hawaiian or Fire Island white pizzas can provide a flavor kick appropriate for the summer months.

Pie is a staple of any American summer, and at Pizza Sola you can choose from Dutch Cherry, Dutch Blueberry or Caramel Apple for dessert.  We also offer the always delectable Smore pie made with Nutella, graham crackers and marshmallows.  It’s like making smores by the campfire, except without the camp or the fire. Or the stick. Or the mess. And in a pizza place.  It has very little in common with making smores by the campfire, but at least it tastes the same, or dare I say, better.

Along with these ideal summer menu items, each Pizza Sola offers a wide variety of drinks to quench your thirst (the Ginger Beer is awesome!) and the Oakland location offers a bar to quench your legally of-age thirst.  Stop by Pizza Sola today (or tomorrow, we don’t want to rush you) and let us know what’s YOUR favorite thing to have during Summertime Pizzatime!

Iron Rich Foods

PlainSlice&Water I discovered this fun food fact: Cast iron skillets used to be the leading source of iron in the American diet! Thankfully that's not the case anymore. Did you know that Pizza is actually classified as rich in iron food? In fact it is one of the highest with volumes of Iron with 4.5 to 5mg! More »

The Skinny Combo

PlainSlice&Water It's summer time in Pittsburgh, or as a customer in our East Side shop referred to it as "Spandex Season". Which seems to go hand in hand with being fit and staying trim, so we put our thinking cap on to come up with the ultimate "Skinny Combo". Thin Crust cheese pizza and a bottle of spring water. Vegetarian Myths Part 2

Myth Number Two: Veggie dishes tend to be high in fat.

Food Art

super_mario_bento_box

I was watching Rachel Ray the other morning (my mornings are incomplete without her in my life) and fell in love with one of her guests. His name is Kai, and he makes crazy cool lunches for his 5-year old son, Laddie. This stay-at-home dad is really talented, and creates pictures of his son’s favorite characters out of fruits, vegetables, cheese, nuts, and anything you could possibly think of. It is so neat! He sketches out an idea on paper and then goes to work in the kitchen carving and strategically placing food.

Vegetarian Myths Part 1

As a fellow vegetarian, it drives me crazy when people assume that a life without meat is unhealthy. Well, if I were to live on nothing but potato chips and cookies, that would be true (albeit delicious), but as a die hard foodie, I find eating for health and flavor is actually achievable.
