Summer’s in full swing in Pittsburgh: PNC Park is packed with people for Pirate games (finally), different venues around the city are filled nightly with the noise of summer concerts and IT IS HOT OUTSIDE.  Luckily, Pizza Sola has a few menu items that are perfect for these hot summer nights.

If you’re Italian you’ve most likely tried eggplant parmesan, if you’re not Italian there’s a good chance you’ve heard of it.  The traditional Italian dish consisting of fried eggplant pieces covered in cheese and tomato sauce is as Campbell’s says “Mmm Mmm Good” and one of my personal favorites!  Another one of my personal favorites, like so many other people, is carbs. I can never get enough bread (there is just something so satisfying about it)!  Therefore, when I decided to try one of Pizza Sola’s Solazones I thought why not go for it and try out the Eggplant Parmesan Solazone.  Oh, by the way, solazone is just the preferred term used by Pizza Sola to refer to their calzones.

At first I was a little unsure of how the experience was going to go, considering its not exactly a menu choice you see frequently, but I gave it a shot. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised and not at all turned off by it judging by the fact that I’m currently munching on another one as I write this.  The ingredients of fried eggplant, mozzarella, and romano cheese are baked to perfection inside a hot oven and served to you warm on a plate.  It even comes with a side of sauce for your dipping pleasure. This solazone is perfect to grab on your way to class, or work and if you order it as a combo you also get a side salad and a fountain drink for only a couple dollars more.  Therefore, if you ever find yourself heading to one of the best in Pittsburgh pizza known as Pizza Sola check out Combo #4 and prepare to be AMAZED!

Ever been curious how your pizza is made? Ever watch your local pizza guy toss a pizza? Ever want to know HOW? Now’s your chance!

If you were ever curious how Pittsburgh pizza specialists Pizza Sola toss those spheres of dough I can now describe how they end up making pizza and normal people end up with dough on their face. Next time you stop into Sola perhaps you can get a lesson too – and then show off your skills.

So here are the simple steps:

1. After you make the pizza dough you want to flatten it into an 4 inch sphere
2. Drape the dough over one of your fists
3. Slip your other fist under the dough next to your first fist
4. Slowly start stretching the dough, moving your right fist away from your face and the left fist towards you so the dough rotates while stretching
5. When the dough reaches about 8 inches you are ready to toss it!
6. Quickly move your left fist in an arc that goes backwards towards your face. You do this while twisting your right fist forward away from your face. If you give a little push upwards with your right fist the dough will spin like a frisbee
7. Gently catch the falling dough with your fists so as not to tear

You may know it as Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras (or just March 8th) but what you should know it as is the day you get bomb pizza at Sola! What better way to gorge your heart out before Ash Wednesday (if you are Catholic) or party for Mardi Gras than with pizza? Pizza just makes everything better.

While you might not be able to show off some skin for free beads or slices, you can kick up some heat with their fiery New York style pies or burn it down with their spicy wings. If you are up in Oakland don’t forget that you can celebrate with their beers! You can’t have Mardi Gras without some alcohol, right? One of the best parts … I won’t say the other, haha.

St. Patty's Day in Pittsburgh: Three Rivers or Green Rivers?

It’s the month of March, and we all know what that means!  If you are from Pittsburgh…you REALLY know what that means! St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner and this town knows how to CeLeBrAtE whether it is at the St. Patty’s Day Parade, in the South Side, or on your own front porch!  Needless to say you’ll probably have all you need to drink, of course for the young-ins that would mean some green Kool-Aid, but with all of the festivities going on who is going to have time to cook?  Wouldn’t it be really convenient if you could just get a quick bite to eat?  Wouldn’t it be even more convenient if that something was cheesy, with sauce, and came in a circular form?  LUCKY for you, and St. Patrick’s Day screams luck, Pizza Sola is available to grant your every wish. Even Celebrities Can't Resist the Power of the Wii

If you’ve ever lived in an off-campus college apartment, or visited one, you become quite aware right away that you are not exactly living in the Hilton Hotel for the  next couple of months.  The carpet is usually stained, the bedrooms are small, and the floorboards are pretty squeaky.  What can you do?  Your house is most likely years and years old.  As I sat in my college living room the other week all of a sudden I heard tons of COMMOTION coming from the floor above me that my roommate occupies.  Of course, I wanted to know what the heck was going on so I wandered upstairs to find out what exactly she was doing.  As I entered her room and realized just what was occupying her time, I also realized I had just stumbled upon the greatest invention ever…the Wii!

Okay, well I didn’t JUST discover it right then and there,  my family actually has owned one for quite some time, but I had never bothered with it or seen anyone play it before.  Now, I finally see what all the fuss is about!  I played some game called “Just Dance” with my roommate and now I’m hooked!  I’m pretty sure playing Wii is more entertaining than any other video game system has ever been, which is probably why Pizza Sola has declared Wednesday Wii Night!  Now hanging out at the best place for Pittsburgh pizza not only allows you to chow down on your favorite slice, but allows you to do so guilt free by providing you with the workout to work it off as well!
